'Dread Is Tangible': The Way Assaults in the Midlands Have Changed Sikh Women's Daily Lives.

Sikh women throughout the Midlands region are recounting a wave of assaults driven by religious bias has created widespread fear within their community, compelling some to “completely alter” about their daily routines.

Series of Attacks Causes Fear

Two rapes targeting Sikh females, each in their twenties, occurring in Walsall and Oldbury, were recently disclosed in recent weeks. An individual aged 32 faces charges associated with a hate-motivated rape connected with the alleged Walsall attack.

Such occurrences, combined with a violent attack against two senior Sikh chauffeurs located in Wolverhampton, resulted in a meeting in parliament in late October about anti-Sikh hate crimes in the region.

Ladies Modifying Habits

A leader from a domestic abuse charity in the West Midlands explained that ladies were changing their everyday schedules for their own safety.

“The dread, the absolute transformation of everyday existence, is palpable. This is unprecedented in my experience,” she said. “This is the first time since I’ve set up Sikh Women’s Aid where women have said to us: ‘We are no longer doing the things that we enjoy because we might get harmed doing them.’”

Ladies were “apprehensive” going to the gym, or taking strolls or jogs at present, she said. “They are doing this in groups. They are sharing their location with their friends or a family member.

“An assault in Walsall will frighten females in Coventry since it’s within the Midlands,” she said. “There has definitely been a shift in the way women think about their own safety.”

Community Responses and Precautions

Sikh gurdwaras across the Midlands have begun distributing rape and security alarms to females in an effort to keep them safe.

Within a Walsall place of worship, a devoted member remarked that the incidents had “changed everything” for Sikhs living in the area.

Notably, she expressed she was anxious visiting the temple alone, and she advised her older mother to stay vigilant while answering the door. “We’re all targets,” she said. “Anyone can be attacked day or night.”

Another member mentioned she was implementing additional safety measures during her travels to work. “I try and find parking nearer to the bus station,” she said. “I put paath [prayer] in my headphones but it’s on a very low volume, to the point where I can still hear cars go past, I can still hear surroundings around me.”

Echoes of Past Anxieties

A parent with three daughters expressed: “My daughters and I take walks, but current crime levels make it feel highly dangerous.

“In the past, we didn’t contemplate these defensive actions,” she said. “I’m perpetually checking my surroundings.”

For someone who grew up locally, the mood recalls the bigotry experienced by prior generations in the 1970s and 80s.

“We’ve experienced all this in the 1980s when our mums used to go past where the community hall is,” she said. “The National Front members would sit there, spitting, hurling insults, or unleashing dogs. Somehow, I’m reliving that era. Mentally, I feel those days have returned.”

A local councillor echoed this, noting individuals sensed “we’ve returned to a period … characterized by blatant bigotry”.

“Individuals are afraid to leave their homes,” she said. “There’s apprehension about wearing faith-based items such as headwear.”

Official Responses and Reassurances

The local council had set up extra CCTV near temples to comfort residents.

Police representatives confirmed they were organizing talks with public figures, ladies’ associations, and public advocates, along with attending religious sites, to talk about ladies’ protection.

“This has been a challenging period for residents,” a chief superintendent told a gurdwara committee. “Everyone merits a life free from terror in their community.”

The council affirmed they had been “engaging jointly with authorities, the Sikh public, and wider society to deliver assistance and peace of mind”.

One more local authority figure commented: “We were all shocked by the awful incident in Oldbury.” She added that the council worked with the police as part of a safety partnership to tackle violence against women and girls and hate crime.
