Gas Detonation Costs 3 Law Enforcement Officers Amid Eviction Operation in Italy
A trio of officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in a seemingly premeditated blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.
Event Timeline
The explosion was triggered as police and firefighters approached the residence near the Verona region to enforce an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.
The three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri military police.
Legal Proceedings
A man and a woman were arrested at the site and one more individual who fled subsequent to the incident was found shortly later. Each of them have been admitted to hospital.
The explosion could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the area displayed the building reduced to a mass of wreckage.
“This is a time for grieving,” said the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to displace the three family members in the past.
Financial Context
The leader of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, said the residence was subject to an eviction order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the property owners.
Negotiators had been assigned to engage the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member set off the explosion.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander the police commander told reporters.
A gas canister had been ignited, and the explosion precisely impacted our members,” he added.
Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the interior minister said.
Casualties and Damage
The wounded by the explosion consisted of eleven more officers of the police force as well as three members of Italy's state police and a firefighter.
Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.
He was convinced the detonation had taken place on a story above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the explosion, he said members had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas cylinders being activated”.
Local Response
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors informed local news, mentioning that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Defence Minister Minister Crosetto joined other political leaders in paying tribute to the three men who had died in the performance of their duties.
