Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is departing from the directorate at OpenAI, just several days after a collection of electronic messages between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
Summers stated in an announcement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have served, optimistic about the prospects of the company, and look forward tracking their development".
The prominent academic, who formerly led the prestigious university, declared on Monday that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Epstein.
Email Communications
The newly public emails revealed that Summers exchanged messages with the financier until the day before Epstein's 2019 apprehension for alleged trafficking of minors.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it understood the economist's decision to resign.
"We value his many contributions and the perspective he brought to the directors," the organization commented.
Congressional Action
This development comes after the two houses of the US legislature voted on Tuesday to endorse a bill that would compel the Department of Justice to release its files on Epstein.
The bill will then head to the office of the White House for approval. The President has said he expects to sign the bill, after reversing his view on the matter following pressure from his base.
Message Details
A group of Epstein-related correspondence made public by the Congressional committee days ago mentioned multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's former circle, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The messages showed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often trying to connect Summers to prominent world leaders.
Personal Response
After the emails were released with the public, the former official expressed he took "full responsibility for my poor choice to continue interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He continued that he wanted "to reestablish faith and repair connections with the people nearest to me".
Career Background
Summers held high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; functioning as treasury secretary under the former president, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He presided over Harvard from five years and continues to be a professor there. When announcing his departure from public commitments earlier on Monday, he stated he would persist with his educational duties.
Additional Consequences
Following the economist's statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research organization in DC where he was a prominent member, confirmed that Summers was not affiliated with the group.
He entered the directorate of the AI company, which makes the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a defeated move to oust its chief executive Sam Altman.
