Heat & Trail Blazers Earn First Victories Following Player Detentions
Miami recorded eighty-six opening half points versus the Grizzlies
The Heat secured a overwhelming 146 to 114 victory over the Grizzlies in their first basketball game after guard Terry Rozier was detained for alleged illegal sports betting.
Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was additionally arrested as part of a broad federal investigation into illegal gambling. Both men contest the claims.
But, the Heat were focused as they recorded eighty-six opening half points to be ahead of the Grizzlies by thirty-nine at halftime, the largest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year history.
Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 scores and afterwards stated Terry had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Bam stated. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother ultimately."
Miami head coach Spoelstra added: "Terry is a person who is important to everyone. He's had a real positive impact on our team.
"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he faces this."
Portland also won their initial match after the detentions, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the squad to a decisive 139 to 119 win against the Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Chauncey and how he coached," Tiago said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but our focus is on the game."
League Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' by Recent Events
Speaking about the arrests for the initial occasion, league head Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the fairness of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
The commissioner also said an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he participated for the Charlotte Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the gambling firms," he continued.
"We investigated that situation and were open regarding it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, found no evidence.
"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating from that point. Naturally, what they revealed recently was an indictment.
"And 30 months after, he has not been found guilty of anything, in justice to Rozier.
"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise in this case between protecting people's rights and investigating."
