The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network launched a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
