Thomas Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Passion So Long As England's Ace Leaves His Ego Outside.
A single omission did the trick. Another and it could have seemed vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is much too clever not to know that claiming the World Cup trophy will likely need help from Jude Bellingham, even if it is equally on the midfielder to adapt to the tactical structures and squad hierarchies essential with England now that he is back in the manager's welcoming fold.
Tuchel seeks Bellingham's edge, his passion, but it is about using it appropriately. Personal talent matters but the squad have learned the hard way that there is consequences when stardom takes over. Nevertheless, a point has been made.
The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after not being selected of the recent team selection. He watched England qualify at the upcoming World Cup without him. He saw Morgan Rogers excel as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He heard Tuchel talk about appreciating the squad's spirit and ethics. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in winning fashion, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid versus their rivals and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; another omission would have put his tournament chances hanging by a thread.
The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder directed towards intimidating opponents rather than teammates. Ultimately, in purely sporting terms, there is no value to creating tension with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has demonstrated that playing for one's country is a valuable, uncertain thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now throw a protective shield for the 22-year-old after showing that he is not afraid to drop big names.
“No issue exists regarding him, and no concern about his personality,” the German said. “Jude just has that aggression. You need that kind of fire to achieve greatness that he reached. We all need to help him and create a setting where he can use that intensity towards opponents and towards the goals we are working towards as a team.”
Bellingham dominated much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s final group games against one opponent and Albania. Any other news? Well, what about Phil Foden? This is another prodigious No 10 in need of support and direction. Foden has been absent for the national team since March and has found it hard to perform well recently but the boss could not ignore the 25-year-old after his performance in his club's victory against the German side recently.
The question, though, is how to use the attacking talents at available. Morgan Rogers and Eze have earned their places and there will be compelling reasons to pick Cole Palmer once he overcomes a persistent groin problem. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be too many? The previous manager never found the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing both stars into the team, restricting Harry Kane’s game in the process.
It is hard to see Tuchel making the same mistake if it hurts the team harmony. Space exists for one No 10, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clear roles helps. Bellingham is in as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the recalled Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no wide role for the City star, who must play central. Tuchel wants him close to Kane. “It is illogical to tell Phil: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, could you fill in at left wing? Or the other flank?’” he stated. “He is to feature in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this vision regarding him for years. I think it fits his style best.”
Tuchel agreed there are times when Foden has not looked himself in an national jersey. “One senses almost like, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight for the game, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's the position, the environment, I don’t know.
“I think he is additionally so used to representing his club in a certain structure, to have a defined role. I think he profits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?
The manager discussed Bellingham bursting through for easy finishes and Foden scoring strikes from outside the box. He said he has a extended list of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and the midfielder have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his fine form for Manchester City at left-back. Intrigue abounds.
The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in this squad. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested deploying the playmaker as a false 9 against one opponent or Albania. Other options, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are alternatives should Kane be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for trying new things.
At the same time, it is also a chance to develop the understanding with his teammate flowing. It is remarkable that one must look back to Bellingham setting up the captain to net in a friendly win versus Scotland in over a year ago to find the one and only time in many appearances for the national team when the pair linked up for a score. Tuchel will be aware that the two stars only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with Denmark and another at the European Championship. The connection is lacking.
“At this point at some point it becomes the duty of the players,” Tuchel said. He does not shy away to speak frankly. Remains a sense of Bellingham being on trial. He may not be guaranteed to begin against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires him onside but he will be monitoring him carefully. Leave the ego outside. It will make a very strong squad into an superior one.
